Medical Emergencies Demands Rapid Decisions

Excited to share our DimSum Daily Lifehacks article on five conversations families should have before a medical emergency demands rapid decisions.

Medical emergencies are not the moment to discover that everyone has a different view, no one knows where the documents are, and the family WhatsApp group is spiralling.

With Hong Kong’s new framework on Advance Medical Directives and Do-Not-Attempt CPR orders coming into effect on 31 July 2026, Winnie Chan and I wrote about five practical conversations worth having before a crisis:

1️⃣ What medical treatment would Mum or Dad actually want?

2️⃣ Who should speak to the doctors?

3️⃣ How do we make sure mental capacity is properly understood?

4️⃣ Where are the important documents and medical information?

5️⃣ What should we do if the family disagrees?

A little planning now can save a lot of confusion, guilt and conflict later — and help ensure the older person’s voice, values and dignity stay at the centre.
